The focus of the series is on male friendship. Some stories also address male/female attraction, male/male attraction, male/female friendship, or female/female friendship.
The series is set largely during wartime and also deals with the issue of abuse of power during peacetime. Because of this, the stories sometimes address the topics of emotional, sexual, and physical abuse, including child abuse.
Violence in the series (which can be severe) is primarily nongraphic or offstage, but some graphic violence occurs. Sexual activities are offstage, although some sexual nudity occurs.
